About TONALITE's Sound

What kind of sound does DTAS for Personalized Timbre provide?
With DTAS, you can experience two distinct sound profiles: General: A sound profile crafted based on our extensive research and development into Personalized Timbre and data collected.

Personalized: A sound tailored specifically to your physical characteristics, delivering a more natural tone.

With the "Personalized" setting, for example, the clarity of the audio is enhanced, allowing you to clearly hear fine details and subtle performance nuances that may have gone unnoticed before.
Will I be able to hear the difference?
Since the sound changes to a more natural tone compared to the "General" setting, some users may find the difference subtle at first. However, we recommend listening closely to the "Personalized" sound for a while before switching back to "General." This makes it much easier to appreciate the natural quality of the audio tailored to your specific physical characteristics.

Generally speaking, the human brain often finds it difficult to perceive a shift toward a more "natural" state as a distinct change. Instead, we tend to realize how natural a previous state was only when we are presented with something "unnatural."
Does the way we hear things really vary that much from person to person?
Yes, it does. Because everyone has a unique physical shape (such as the ears and head), the sound waves that actually reach each person's eardrums are different.

This is why TONALITE uses DTAS technology to customize the audio based on your individual physical characteristics. If you ever have the chance to listen to a "Personalized" profile created for someone else, you will likely notice a significant difference, which highlights just how unique your own profile is.
Why does the sound change depending on the person?
The sound is customized to match your specific physical characteristics by applying individual personalization based on your scan and measurement results. Because of this, the degree of change from the "General" sound profile will vary from person to person.
The difference between "General" and "Personalized" is very small. Is this normal?
Yes, this is completely normal. The purpose of DTAS is to apply personalization to provide you with a more natural tone tailored to your physical characteristics.

Depending on your specific physical traits and the results of your scan, the difference between the default "General" profile and your custom "Personalized" profile may be subtle. When comparing the two, we recommend focusing on which profile feels more "natural" to your ears rather than searching for a dramatic change.
There are three Timbre Coefficient available. Which one should I choose?
The three options consist of the specific setting you selected during the "Timbre Coefficient Selection" process, along with two additional variations based on that selection to provide a broader range of choices.

At final, we use the term "Timbre Coefficient" to refer to the specific characteristics of how an individual perceives timbre through binaural hearing. Please feel free to choose the setting that feels most comfortable and pleasing to you depending on the content you are listening to.
Why is it necessary to select a Timbre Coefficient?
This step is essential to complete the personalization of your audio profile. While the initial personalization—based on your ear scans and measurements—is performed for each ear individually, we actually perceive sound with both ears (binaural hearing).

To accurately deliver 2-channel stereo music, we need to understand how your unique hearing process captures sound through both ears. The "Timbre Coefficient Selection" is the process of deriving your specific characteristics of sound perception (which we call the "Timbre Coefficient"). By determining this coefficient, the personalization process is fully optimized for your unique hearing.
Can my friends listen to my "Personalized" sound profile?
While your friends can use the earphones just like any regular pair, the sound profile has been specifically tailored to your physical characteristics. Because of this, the audio will not sound "natural" to them, and their experience will likely be quite different from yours.

In fact, letting others listen to your "Personalized" sound can be quite interesting—it is a great way for them to experience firsthand just how much sound varies based on each person's unique physical shape.

About DTAS for Personalized Timbre

Why is "Personalization" necessary?
In our daily lives, we experience sound waves that have been naturally shaped by our physical features (such as the shape of our ears and head). However, because earphones are designed to emit sound waves directly into the ear canal, they bypass these physical influences. This results in a sound quality that is different from what we naturally perceive as "real."

To resolve this, we must recreate the sound by re-applying the unique influence of your own physical characteristics. In other words, personalization is essential to achieving a truly natural sound experience through earphones.
How does this differ from other "Personalization" or "Customization" technologies?
There are currently several different approaches to audio personalization:

1. Using outer ear shape to improve spatial imaging.
2. Measuring acoustic characteristics based on how the earphones are worn.
3. Correcting hearing sensitivity through simple listening tests.
TONALITE’s DTAS is different because it focuses on personalizing the timbre (sound color) based on scan and measurement results. At final, we believe that when it comes to enjoying audio content, the naturalness of the timbre is more important than spatial impressions. By focusing our personalization on the "timbre" first, we aim to achieve a state where earphones deliver the most natural sound possible.
Is DTAS an Equalizer (EQ)?
An equalizer (EQ) is a tool used to adjust sound based on your listening impressions—for example, boosting frequencies you feel are missing or tuning the audio to suit your personal taste.

DTAS is fundamentally different. It does not rely on a listening process. Instead, it creates personalized data based strictly on mathematical processing of your ear scans and measurement data. By doing so, it achieves "Personalized Timbre" through a scientific approach that is entirely distinct from a traditional EQ.
Is the "Personalized" profile calculated based on the "General" sound?
No, the "Personalized" profile is not created by modifying or building upon the "General" profile.

Instead, the "General" profile was independently developed based on a vast dataset collected from a wide range of individuals during our research and development into personalized timbre. Both settings are unique results of our data-driven approach.
How does this differ from the Harman Curve?
The Harman Curve is a target response curve for earphones and headphones developed to mimic the sound of high-end speakers in an ideal room. It reflects a broad preference for what many listeners find "pleasant." In products that adopt the Harman Curve, the exact same curve is implemented for every user, meaning individual differences in physical ear and head shape are not taken into account. Consequently, the Harman Curve may feel like a great fit for some, but not for others.

In contrast, DTAS performs personalization based on each individual’s unique physical characteristics. Our goal is to ensure that every person can enjoy a "comfortable and natural timbre" through their earphones. Therefore, DTAS and the Harman Curve are based on fundamentally different design philosophies.
What specific technologies are used in DTAS?
DTAS utilizes our proprietary technology called "Timbre Personalization for Earphones," which was developed through our own in-house research and development.

About Setting Up DTAS for Personalized Timbre

Is DTAS available for everyone?
Yes, anyone can use DTAS as long as they have access to the "TONALITE" app.
Can I redo the DTAS process as many times as I want?
Yes! There is no limit to the number of times you can perform the process, so feel free to redo it whenever you like.
My hairstyle is very different from its usual state. Will this affect the result?
It is not a problem. Since we do not use the shape of your hair in our DTAS calculations, it will not affect your results. You can proceed with confidence regardless of your hairstyle.
Can I perform the scan by myself?
Yes, you can easily complete the scan on your own by following the step-by-step guidance provided within the app.
How are my physical characteristics measured?
The process uses the camera on your smartphone or tablet to scan your head and take photos of your outer ears. This data is then sent to final’s dedicated server, where it is analyzed to estimate your specific physical characteristics.
What kind of hearing test is performed?
We do not perform standard hearing tests like those used in clinical exams. Instead, we use your physical measurement data to perform complex mathematical processing. This ensures that you can enjoy audio content with a timbre that sounds perfectly natural to you.
How are the scanned data and captured photos processed?
The data scanned and photos taken for DTAS are transmitted to final’s dedicated server, where they are analyzed to create your personalized timbre profile.

Once the analysis is complete, the data and images are stored on our server in a way that is not linked to any personally identifiable information. This stored data is used solely to improve analysis accuracy and is permanently deleted after 30 days.
Will I get the same result if I rescan with DTAS?
The results may not be exactly the same every time. Because the analysis and calculations can vary based on subtle differences in the head scan or the captured ear data—such as the angle or lighting conditions—you may notice slight variations between sessions. However, our system has been designed to minimize these variations to ensure a stable experience.
What should I do if the results from my first measurement were better than the second?
Because the calculation is performed on the server each time based on your head scan, outer ear photos, and ear canal measurements, it is possible for the results to vary.

In particular, if the photos of your outer ears are taken even slightly from an angle rather than directly from the front, it can affect the calculation. To minimize differences between sessions and achieve the best results, please try to ensure your ears are photographed from a direct, straight-on angle.
If I set up DTAS Personalized on my smartphone, can I still use it when connected to a different smartphone or music player?
Yes. Since the Personalized profile is saved directly onto the earphones, you can enjoy your customized sound even when connected to a device other than the one used for the initial setup.

Note: The option to re-select or adjust your "Timbre Coefficient" requires data stored on the original smartphone used for the scan. Therefore, these specific adjustments can only be performed on that device.
If I replace or exchange my TONALITE due to loss or malfunction after completing DTAS, or if I purchase a new unit, can I transfer my DTAS Personalized data to the new device?
DTAS measurement data is linked to the specific unit used during the measurement and cannot be transferred to another TONALITE. Therefore, when using a new TONALITE, we kindly ask that you perform the DTAS Process again.
If I use TONALITE with multiple devices, can I access all DTAS functions on every device combination?
Due to system specifications, certain DTAS features may not be available on devices where the DTAS process has not been performed.
Please refer to the table below for details.

My physical shape changes gradually over time. Should I rescan periodically?
While we recommend rescanning if you experience significant physical changes, there is no need to do so frequently. For most users, the initial measurements will remain effective for a long period.
I have a large mole on my ear. Will it affect the scan or photo capture?
In general, it should not be an issue. During the DTAS Process and photo capture process, analysis is performed based on the overall shape of the ear and the spatial relationships of its features. Surface characteristics such as moles or spots do not significantly affect the resulting personalized sound profile.
Can DTAS Process be performed using eartips other than the included?
We recommend using the included eartips for DTAS measurement. However, achieving a proper seal when wearing the earphones is an even more important factor in maximizing performance and the effectiveness of personalization.

While we generally recommend using included eartips, if a proper seal cannot be achieved, please use your own eartips that provide a secure seal.
If I change the eartips, do I need to redo the DTAS Process?
Yes. Changing the eartips may affect the level of seal and how the sound is perceived, so we recommend performing the process again if you have decided to switch to different eartips. However, since DTAS is fundamentally based on your physical characteristics, remeasurement may not be necessary if the change is temporary and you do not notice any discomfort or difference in sound.

Audio Experience by Content

What genres of music are best suited for this?
Because DTAS performs timbre personalization based on your unique physical characteristics, you can enjoy a natural and balanced sound across all music genres.
Can I use these for gaming?
Yes, you can certainly use them for gaming. If you notice any lag between the audio and the video, please enable "Low Latency Mode" via the app for a more synchronized experience.
I don't listen to music very often; I mostly listen to audiobooks and the radio. Will I still notice an effect?
Yes, absolutely. Because TONALITE personalizes the timbre based on your unique physical characteristics, you will experience a more natural sound across all audio content, not just music. In fact, you may find the sense of "naturalness" even more noticeable with audiobooks and the radio, where the clarity of the human voice is key.
Is the effect less noticeable with poorly recorded audio sources?
The benefits of personalized timbre can be felt regardless of the recording or mastering quality. Even with older or lower-quality recordings, the personalization ensures that you hear the audio in the most natural way possible for your unique physical characteristics.
Does it work well with Anime songs (Anisong) or Vocaloid music?
Yes, it does. In addition to Anisong and Vocaloid, the effect is noticeable across all types of audio content. Because the optimization is tailored to your physical characteristics, you can enjoy these genres with a more natural and immersive timbre.
I prefer strong bass. Can I adjust the sound to my liking?
Yes, you can. By using the "10-Band EQ" feature in the app, you can adjust the levels of any frequency range—including the bass—to suit your personal preference.
Which streaming services do you recommend?
During our research and development, we test with a wide variety of streaming services and audio sources. Please use your preferred service; our technology is designed to deliver a natural, high-quality experience regardless of the platform you choose.
Can I also enjoy spatial audio content?
Yes. TONALITE’s timbre personalization processes sound specifically for "timbre" (tone quality), operating independently of spatial characteristics. This means it has almost no negative impact on the sense of space.

In other words, when listening to spatial audio (immersive binaural sound), the spatial impression is preserved while only the timbre is improved. This allows you to experience spatial content with a much more natural and realistic sound.
Which codec is best for DTAS?
Our implementation is optimized for all codecs supported by the product. As with any audio experience, using high-quality codecs and source content will provide a more immersive and high-fidelity listening experience.

Scientific & Academic Background

What is "Timbre"?
Timbre (pronounced tam-ber) refers to the overall impression and character of a sound, excluding its pitch, volume, or direction. It is the quality that allows you to distinguish between different sounds. For example, even if different instruments of the same type play the exact same note at the same volume, they will sound different due to their unique timbre, which is influenced by the maker and the materials used.
Isn't sound a matter of "preference"?
When choosing content, personal preference certainly plays a major role. However, traditional earphones often negatively impact the sound—particularly the timbre—by altering it or introducing unwanted artifacts (additional noises).

TONALITE's DTAS is based on the technology of "Timbre Individuality for Earphones." It aims to eliminate the earphone's influence on the original timbre as much as possible. This allows you to enjoy the natural timbre as the creator intended. By removing the distortions caused by the device, you are free to focus on the content itself and choose what you love based on its original, true sound.
